Remember them – 14

I thought it would be nice to relive some of the tunes that I for some time had forgotten about but at times in my life meant something to me, they will mainly be the songs and bands that anyone under the age of thirty (Ok forty… who am I kidding!) may never have heard of, if you’re a little older you may just have some memories of your own in amongst the music to follow, there’ll be some rubbish in here but I can promise there’ll be some gems too.

REM – American rock band, former in 1980. They got themselves a good name in the industry but it wasn’t until the early 90’s that they really hit the big time.  They were re-signed for a reported US$80 million, at the time the most expensive recording contract in history. Its 1996 release,New Adventures In Hi-Fi although critically acclaimed, fared worse commercially than expected. The following year, Bill Berry left the band, while Stipe, Buck, and Mills continued the group as a trio. Through some changes in musical style, the band continued its career into the next decade with mixed critical and commercial success, despite having sold more than 85 million records worldwide and becoming one of the world’s best-selling music artists of all time. In 2007, the band was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, in their first year of eligibility. R.E.M. disbanded amicably in September 2011.

It’s hard to pick just one of their songs, when I saw them in Manchester many years ago it was the one that struck me as being one of the most beautiful live songs I had ever heard. I am slightly bias as I think Michael Stipe is a rock god.

Enjoy.
