3 words – bouquet, skin, dog.
I watch you, closely. We have been friends for years and now suddenly there is an electricity in the air that separates us. My other friends had always said that men and women couldn’t just be friends but that’s what we are, now I wonder if they were right.
You are laughing at me again, I always seem to have the ability to make you laugh, I feel natural around you , not caring if I make a fool of myself. No one knows me as well as you do. I love the way the creases in the corner of your eyes deepen when you see me, the way nothing is ever an effort between us.
We take the dogs for a walk, letting them run free across the fields as we sit and talk about our futures, you a famous poet, me, well that’ll be my secret for just now. Then as we laugh and my hand skims the surface of your skin, the spark is so intense it seems that the world stills for just a moment. I see in your eyes that you felt it too.
We let the moment go, it would confuse things too much and we both know it. Our eyes lock for a moment and the understanding passes between us. The relaxed day is over, the moment gone. We call the dogs and walk towards our homes, both lost in our thoughts, words cannot overcome the situation.
My mind is called back to the present as I am handed a bouquet of flowers, it’s our twentieth wedding anniversary and although our dogs are long gone, I still adore the crinkle in the corner of his eyes when he sees me.
