  1. Hey Steph, how are you?

I recently visited ‘Ferryside’, Daphne Du Maurier’s house in the sleepy little village of Bodinnick-by-Fowey in Cornwall. It is where she wrote this book. If you’ve never been to Fowey – infamous for privateers and swashbuckling pirates! – or visited the Du Maurier house, I’d thoroughly recommend it.

Whilst there, I came across a large metal sculpture called, ‘Rook with a Book’ (2018) that stands at the harbours edge within sight of Maurier’s house. It is a celebration of her work but specifically references her short-story, “The Birds” – a horror story first published in 1952 and later appropriated by Alfred Hitchcock for his 1963 film, The Birds. When I visited the statue it was surrounded by flocks of gabbling sea-gulls and cawing crows: all very reminiscent of the film!

The statue is due to go up for public auction in 2020, so be quick if you wish to see it!

    Ciao for now,

    DN
