The Friendship of Hares.

Steve Mackay Photography.

Somewhere in England, Trish walked the fields, taking some precious time for herself. Life had been far too busy recently. She looked skyward and noticed the faint signs of a moonrise, she finally began to feel herself unwind and feel more at peace. She lay down in the grass to watch the moon for a while, as it traced its path across the azure blue sky. Her thoughts began to slow as she drifted into a gentle sleep

When she opened her eyes, she froze, she was momentarily discombobulated whilst her mind scrambled to recall where she was, then her confusion settled. She also had the sensation that she was being watched. She checked the sky, the moon had moved and the sky was beginning to darken to hues of pink and red, she didn’t move. She didn’t want whoever was watching her to realise she was awake until she was prepared to react. There was a rustle of grass to her right. She slowly rolled onto her side ready to face the noise, eyes closed once more.

She gently opened her eyes and found herself looking into brown fur and a twitching nose as it smelt her, trying to decide if she was friendly or something that it could eat. The nose moved away sensing her awakening.

The hare pulled itself up to its full height, but didn’t run. Trish’s heart was beating hard in her chest, yet she was enchanted. It was no longer curious, it moved towards her, pawing at her as if it wanted to play. She sat up slowly and offered her hand, the hare dipped its head and nuzzled her hand, inching its body closer. In a few moments, to the casual viewer it looked like they were in an embrace. Trish had never felt so happy or at peace with the world.  This was the ultimate in trust she felt honoured, the hare looked in to her eyes for a moment then turned and hopped away.

The hare stopped and looked back before it took off into the dusk and went back to its life. Trish knew she would return here many times. Friendships like these were to be treasured.
